Carpet Shop in Bournemouth and Poole

There’s such a wide variety of carpets available today, with so many colours, textures and patterns to choose from that you might be wondering where to start. At Carpets Direct we have a huge selection at our carpet shop in Poole to suit all tastes and budgets. With over 30 years’ experience in the flooring industry, we have the knowledge and expertise to help you make the right choice.

Carpet is a good insulator

As carpet is such a soft material, it absorbs sound well, reducing echo in a room. It’s a very efficient thermal insulator too, especially when coupled with a good underlay - helping to reduce energy costs, something we all try to do.

It’s safe, and easy to fit

Because of its texture it’s unlikely anyone would ever slip or fall on it, but if they did, the risk of serious injury would be reduced considerably compared with a hard floor. Also, unlike hard flooring, little surface preparation is required before laying, apart from underlay. Carpet can be laid relatively quickly on any surface and minor floor imperfections can be easily covered.

Carpet brings luxury, warmth and comfort to a room like no other floor covering can.

Wool or man-made fibre?

Carpets made of wool are the highest quality you can buy - it looks great, is hard-wearing but warm and soft underfoot, and it’s a very efficient insulator too. It’s not a cheap carpet, so you can expect to pay a premium for it.

To make a good multi-purpose but cheaper carpet, wool can be blended with man-made fibres like polyester or polyamide.

Polyester looks and feels more like wool than any other synthetic fibre – it’s soft strong and stain resistant, and polyamide (better known as nylon) is available in a huge variety of shades and hues that can’t be reproduced in wool.

Polypropylene carpet is a very popular choice because of its durability and resistance to stains. It can even be cleaned with diluted bleach.

Woven or tufted? Looped or cut?

The two types of carpet most commonly sold in the UK are woven and tufted. Axminsters and Wiltons are made from wool, and are woven using traditional loomed methods. It’s a labour intensive process and its high price reflects the amount of work involved. Tufted carpets are much easier to manufacture and they can be made from all types of yarn, and are divided into loop and cut piles. Looped pile or Berber is made from continuous loops with a knot-like appearance. The loops can either be low and tight, giving a firmer feel underfoot – good for busy areas of the home -  or of differing heights, giving a slightly softer, more textured pile.

Carpet Cost

Carpet prices vary considerably, depending on the type and quality you require, but bear in mind that if your choice is based purely on price, cheap carpet probably won’t wear as well as one of a better quality, so you can expect to replace it sooner. From time to time we do have discount carpets on sale so why not pop in to our warehouse in Poole and have a look at our range - we can advise you on what type of carpet is best for your room, always taking your budget into account.
